“We Got the Beat” was written by Charlotte Irene Caffey (born October 21, 1957, Santa Monica, California) who is an American rock and roll guitarist and composer. She is best known for her work with the Go-during Go’s their 1980s heyday and for composing the song “We Got the Beat” for them.
Before joining the Go-in Go’s 1978 and switching to guitar, Caffey started her musical career as a bass guitar player in the early Los Angeles punk band The Eyes, before moving on to other projects. Belinda Carlisle, a fellow band member, remained a close friend of hers. From 1988 until 1992, she was a member of her own band, The Graces, which included Meredith Brooks and Gia Ciambotti, and which produced the album Perfect View in 1989.
Along from co-writing the theme song for the television series Clueless with Anna Waronker, Caffey also played piano on Jewel’s “Foolish Games” album and co-wrote the No. 1 country smash “But for the Grace of God” with Keith Urban, which reached No. 1 in the United States. Lovelace: A Rock Musical is a collaboration between Caffey and Anna Waronker, who created the book, music, and lyrics. In 2008, the Hayworth Theatre in Los Angeles hosted the world premiere of the rock musical. In August 2010, a new production of Lovelace: A Rock Musical made its premiere at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, marking the show’s first appearance in the United Kingdom.
